My name is Tabor Carlton and I build websites. Alternative Media is my freelance studio in Morrison, Colorado but I do work for people anywhere. Even a few people on the other side of the world.
My philosophy on life is to try and push myself out of my comfort zone, and strive to find ways of doing things differently. I find that I learn alot about myself by doing so, and it reveals things around me. My dream is for Alternative Media to be a different kind of design studio for my clients, from the way that we approach projects together, all the way to the outcome. If you're into that sort of thing, don't be shy. Give me a shout..
I've lived in America and Australia, where I have managed to meet some amazing people, gain dual citizenship, and learn quite a bit about myself in the process. A process which is far from over...
I roll solo on most projects, but I team up with other designers from time to time either to collaborate on ideas or just to code and build their designs. I feel pretty lucky being able to be pretty good at something I love. Design and development feel more like play than work most of the time. Part designer, part geek. I'm cool with that.
Music is a huge part of who I am and what I do. My iTunes library is obscenely large (it takes up 2 hard drives). Right now, I'm really into fast electronica, cuz it makes me feel 'technical'. I don't know what that means exactly, but sometimes 20 minutes will pass while I'm writing code, and I'll realize I haven't blinked... I also dig hip-hop, downtempo, drum and bass and a lil bit a Frank Sinatra... Enough about me though, why don't you check out my work, that is after all the real reason you're here.
Keeping up on technology trends can sometimes make me feel like a circus performer who just manages to keep his plates spinning on the end of those sticks, constantly running around, and only making enough progress to keep myself running in circles. But regardless of that I tend to keep up with technology out of my own interest more than anything else.
I love taking a design and breaking it apart into XHTML/CSS code, although the flavor of the month is some new DHTML techniques I'm toying with from the Mootools javascript framework. Coupling that with my knowledge of PHP/MySQL, you should be seeing some more cool online applications coming out of Alternative Media.
I've been fortunate enough to win some awards and have my work recognized over the last few years. Among them, the award for Multimedia student of the year while studying in Australia, and recently winner of the KBCO Lights, Camera, KBCO television commercial.
My main goal is to make technology cool and easy for both geek and non-geek alike. Maybe it's like I'm an ambassador, paving the road of communication between 2 seperate sects of society, bringing them together for the common good. Maybe not.
My passion for what I do comes from the fact that human beings are emotionally motivated by visual stimulation, and I love making the connections between the (emotional) design side of a project and the (logical) development side of it.
Feel free to contact me if you have a project you want to talk to me about.
The following section contains samples of work that I've solely developed or collaborated on over the past few years.

Role: Experimentation
Description: MySpace is so yesterday. Virb is the new social networking site to pay attention to. It couldn't be any more cool. Well, it probably could be, but they are working on it as we speak. Virb is a great example of how modern web standards can provide so much flexibility accessibility, and ... well... see for yourself. Virb's website, my design.

Role: Identity / Website design
Description: An IT Solutions provider, Cilicon needed a solid image that reflected the market and a solid website to boot.
Role: Identity, website design/development
Description: It was amazing to watch this non-profit organization rise from the ground up, and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy to know that I had a small part in its massive success. Helping end the pet overpopulation problem in Australia, and fighting for animal's rights abroad. You can't argue with that. I'm currently redesigning the site for a v2 launch later in the year.

Role: Flash website development
Description: As part of the ardium advertising design department of yester-year I collaborated with the creative director to develop ardium websites version 2 and 3 (with a version 4 coming soon!)

Role: Identity, website design/development
Description: Newly refurbished Terrasound Recording Studios needed a new identity to match their upgraded facilities. The new website included a complete design overhaul and attached content management system allowing the studio to update content at their whim.

Role: Website design
Description: I developed a design, flash components and audio for this site as part of a collaboration with one of my regular partners in crime for a site targeted at a younger market. If you own crocs, but don't have foyo's... where you been?!

Role: Website design / Development
Description: As part of a new area of research (as well as my final project at University) I developed a community site with a small custom content management system for the Health Department of Griffith University. The project never saw full fruition unfortunately but was well received by everyone involved.

Role: Identity, Website design / Development
Description: I had dabbled enough in new media to get serious about getting a job in the industry. This was my first [ real ] online portfolio. There are some video samples of early directorial work and editing, as well as digital music composition, so it might be worth checking out... I'll let you decide.

I would love to hear from you. If you have a project you want to talk to me about, I'd love to hear about it. The volume of email I get varies, so it may take me a little while to write you back, but I promise to get back to you if you write me.
